POSTDOC OPPORTUNITY
The lab currently cannot support postdoctoral fellows without external funding. Contact me if you are interested in applying for NSERC, CIHR, or other awards.
We encourages an open and diverse community that fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. Applications from members of groups that have been marginalized are encouraged to apply.
Our lab is continuously seeking a talented postdoctoral researcher to investigate the regulation of ion channels by kinases, cytoskeletal proteins in various tissues, and nuclear receptors. Our lab integrates structural biology (including cryo-EM) alongside protein biophysical and biochemical methods to explore the function of various proteins.
UCalgary is in the process of acquiring a 100kV Tundra cryo-EM screening instrument. High-resolution cryo-EM data using a 300 kV Titan Krios will be collected at nearby facilities (UBC, University of Alberta, or sent to cryo-EM centers in the US). The successful candidate will be involved in protein expression, purification of challenging proteins, and maintaining mammalian cell lines.
This role offers the chance to join prestigious research institutes such as the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute or the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, depending on the project focus. Our lab is part of a vibrant research community focused on proteins involved in neuronal, neuromuscular, and cardiovascular diseases.
Qualifications: We are looking for motivated individuals who have obtained a PhD within the last three years, with experience in structural biology (crystallography, NMR, cryo-EM) or protein biophysics (ITC, SPR, MST, etc.). This position is an excellent opportunity to gain interdisciplinary experience and expand your expertise in complementary techniques.
How to Apply: Please send your application, including an updated CV, contact information for three references, and a letter describing your motivation to join our team, to omid.hajighassemi('at')ucalgary.ca.
Join us to contribute to groundbreaking research in ion channel regulation and broaden your scientific expertise in a collaborative, innovative environment!
GRADUATE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
We are looking to fill a Ph.D. or M.Sc. position as part of a new team investigating kinase regulation of ion channels. The student is expected part of an interdisciplinary team that uses structural biology (crystallography, computational biology, single particle cryo-EM), protein biochemistry and molecular biology methods to study disease-relevant protein states and tease out novel interactions that ultimately will help elucidate how our brain and muscles work.
The ideal candidate would be a talented and highly motivated undergraduate or master student with degree completed in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry or Physical Chemistry. The minimum GPA equivalent to be considered for this position is >3.2 (>75 %). International applicants are required to provide proof of proficiency in English, if the language of instruction is not English. A TOEFL score of 97 (Internet-based test), or an IELTS score of 7.0 or above is required.
Prior experience with molecular biology techniques, protein biochemistry/biophysics OR structural biology is required.
Please do not send an application to the department directly. Interested students can email me at: omid.hajighassemi(at)ucalgary.ca
